Brig. Gen. Julia Jeter Cleckley became the first black female general in the Army National Guard in September 2002. She joined the New York National Guard in 1976 after serving in the Women's Army Corps. She served as special assistant to the Army Guard director. She recounts her life story in the book "A Promise Fulfilled."
